Contributions of the research to the evaluation of students and teachers

Drs. Eduardo Backhoff Escudero, Joaquín Caso Niebla, Luis Ángel Contreras Niño, Norma Larrazolo Reyna, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Macías, and Vicente Arámburo Vizcarra.

Coordinated by: Edna Luna Serrano.

2012

Educational evaluation is an important part of educational processes. Starting from evaluation matters of educational quality from a country, state and at classroom, are answered. Two parties are fundamental, the student and the professor. Evaluation relevance and its complexity as an object of study contribute to its professionalization. The new evaluation models are diverse with a methodological complementarity.  This paper presents the development in learning evaluation and in teaching practices made in Mexico to discuss the relationship between evaluation and educational quality for those who are interested on the subject, find useful material to comprehend this discipline.

Voices of Mexican psychology

Coordinated by: Dr. Joaquín Caso Niebla.

2012

This book documents the evolution of psychology in Mexico, through nine of its main characters. The story is woven with testimonies and it helps us to measure the challenges lying ahead Mexican psychology. The nine chapters on this book are the result of several interviews made in June, 2010, and of the detailed revision and adequacy of initial transcriptions made by the authors. The content of this book clearly states that many characters have been significant in Mexican psychology development, but without the contributions of Emilio Ribeslñesta, Arturo Bouzas Riaño, Juan José Sánchez Sosa, Isabel Reyes Lagunes, Laura Hernández Guzmán, Javier Nieto Gutiérrez, Rolando Díaz Loving, Maria Elena Median Mora and Juan Lafraga Corona, psychology would not have reached the consolidation it has today.

Proposal of a universal pension in Mexico: economic analysis and social impact.

Dr. Juan Carlos Rodríguez Macías.

2012

Economic instability and lack of social protection in some vulnerable population sectors are related to social security models adopted by several countries. Usually, most of the protected population achieves such condition through participating on the formal labour market, where required steps to protect workers and their families from main social risks, are taken. In this regard, one of the major challenges in the coming years is ageing, since Mexico will rapidly pass from a young population to an aged one. Therefore, this book presents a universal minimum pension to decrease the vulnerability, maintaining a minimal and continuous income level.

Encounter of the University with the neighborhood: knowledge, learning, service and community development.

Dr. Lucía Coral Aguirre Muñoz.

2012

This book gives the opportunity to know a social service experience, culture, research and community development from a detailed privacy. A methodological model to illustrate the social problems is presented and to keep track of the approach in which the needs at Infonavit Punta Banda (the closest neighborhood to UABC) have been addressed. Thus, there is evidence of how the encounter between the university and the locality has contributed, both to educational theory as to community knowledge.

Infonavit Punta Banda: the story of a standing community

Coordinated by: Dr. Lucía Coral Aguirre Muñoz

2012

This paper is a systematic description of new low-cost neighborhood living conditions, which narrates from the protagonists’ view, the difficulties they have faced to obtain a better quality of life. Besides keeping a reminiscence and strengthen the Infonavit Punta Banda residents identity, the book represents for scholars of urban life, such as historians, anthropologists, sociologists, architects and town planners, a chance to come close to the foundation and evolution of residential centers.

Associated variables with academic performance of Mexican adolescents.

Dr. Joaquín Caso Niebla.

2011

The purpose of this study was to explore the measure in which some personal variables predict the academic performance of high school students. 1581 students from a Mexico City public high school participated, among ages of 15 and 23 years old, who responded self-evaluation tests about self-esteem, academic assertiveness, goal settings, study behavior and consumption of substances. A multiple regression analysis revealed the relative contribution of motivation, study skills and the use of substances on academic performance, which was based on average grades. There were differences between genre in several dimensions, indicating that women have better academic and educational performance, as well as motivation, study abilities and lower self-esteem than men.

Teacher’s contextual and formative factors affecting online teaching design

Dr. Lewis McAnally Salas.

2011

The use of technology to promote the addition of excluded and to display alternatives to merely business positions is an unfinished agenda for most of the Higher Education Institutions (IES, its Spanish initials) in Latin America. Hence, this book is intended to identify how teacher’s contextual and training factors affect online courses design. In order to comply with this, institutional factors that conform work context are considered, as well as professorate training that make them suitable for teaching online courses, emphasizing pedagogical knowledge, technological skills and their educational beliefs.

Development and evaluation of online courses for statistics teaching based on constructivism and learning objects.

Dr. Javier Organista Sandoval

2011

In the concept of our university (UABC), the findings of this book show the feasibility and relevance of innovating educative processes through incorporation of web-based technological tools. Nevertheless, it is perceived an underutilization of the internet as a resource in the university community. To avoid a technological backwardness a shared vision is required, in which the university, at all levels, be committed to innovation and promote educational developments supported by digital technology. This book acts as a guide to create a better organization of these changes.

The process of digital convergence: a strategic proposal to promote its adoption.

M.Sc. Mayer R. Cabrera Flores and Arturo Serrano Santoyo.

2011

This publication basically states, through analyzing the origin of phenomena such as globalization, knowledge association and the adoption of new information and communication technologies, how mankind’s lifestyle has changed. Interaction among these phenomena, combined with the search of integral communication solutions from society, have made possible the emergence of the phenomena known as digital convergence, which offers different regions, new windows of useful opportunities, benefiting its competitiveness and integral development.

Assessment of teaching skills in higher education.

Coordinated by: Edna Luna Serrano

2010

This work is the result of a joint effort among members of the Network for Development and Evaluation of Academic Competences (REDECA, by its Spanish initials) composed by three academic boards of the Faculty Improvement Programme (PROMEP, by its Spanish initials) and the Network of Researchers on Evaluation Teaching (RIED, by its Spanish initials). The book presents the results of studies made around the research project “Model for the development and evaluation of academic competences”, whose purpose was to build a model for evaluating and encouraging the development of competences in college professors, given the concern about conception, identification and assessment of competences at this academic level.
